The International Ontology Congress. Since its first conference in 1993, the International Ontology Congress has aimed to breathe new life into the issues of ancient Greek philosophy, examining them from the perspective of contemporary thought. Thus, its Permanent Scientific Committee includes eminent philosophers as well as scientists (physicists Alain Aspect and Carlo Rovelli; late Nobel Prize winners Willis Lamb and Ilhya Prigogine; philosophers Pierre Aubenque, Jacques Bouveresse and Ulises Moulines, geneticist Francisco Ayala and sculptor Eduardo Chillida, among others). The topics of the successive Congress conferences are linked to Gómez Pin’s main theoretical concerns in recent years: on the one hand, changes in the conception of nature, from the Physis of the Ionian school to quantum physics; on the other, what disciplines such as genetics, paleontology and linguistics mean for contemporary philosophical anthropology. Gómez Pin has made a concerted effort to collaborate with scientists (physicists on the one hand, paleontologists and geneticists on the other), always with a mind to bringing a fresh perspective to ontological issues, thereby emulating the great tradition of natural philosophy. The connection between Gómez Pin’s personal research interests and the International Ontology Congress has pushed him to fight for the presence of eminent scientists as well as Greek philosophers (Enrico Berti, Pierre Aubenque, Jonathan Barnes, etc) and first rate contemporary thinkers (Daniel Dennett, Steven Pinker, John Searle, Hilary Putnam, Adolf Grünbaum, Bas van Fraassen) at the Congress’s conferences. These scientists include Nobel Prize for Physics laureates Frank Wilczek Cohen Tannoudji, François Englert and Gerardus ‘t Hooft, physicists Ignacio Cirac, Alain Aspect and Anton Zeilinger, Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine laureate Christian de Duve, geneticist Francisco J. Ayala and the paleontologists David Lorkipanitze and Eudald Carbonell. In 2018 the Ontology Congress conference was held in San Sebastian and Barcelona under the Honorary Presidency of Nobel Prize for Physics François Englert.
